Dr. LaSalle’s interview with Spine Universe about the risk factors and treatment options for Spondylosis.
Spondylosis is a type of arthritis caused by wear and tear to the spine. This can be a result of discs and joints degenerate, or when bone spurs grow on the vertebrae. These changes can impair the spine’s movement and affect the nerves and other functions.
What Are Risk Factors for Developing Spondylosis?
According to Dr. Jacob LaSalle, board certified anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist at Hudson Medical, common risk factors include:
- Age
- Being overweight or obese
- Sedentary lifestyle with little or no exercise
- Smoking
- Having certain conditions like diabetes, gout, psoriasis, tuberculosis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and Lyme disease
- Overuse, high-impact activities, and repeat occupational trauma
