Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate neuromuscular function and detect any neural or muscular abnormalities. Your pain management doctor may order an EMG if you display symptoms such as shooting pain, tingling, weakness, numbness, and/or cramping. During the study, tiny electrodes are inserted into different muscle groups to record electrical activity while the muscle is at rest and while it is contracting. Another part of the study, which is called a nerve conduction velocity test (NCV), uses electrode stickers to measure the speed and strength of an electrical impulse through a nerve.
The results are then analyzed by a neurologist, who will review the findings with you and instruct you follow up with your pain management doctor for further treatment.
